Children coming home from school are always enthusiastic to tell stories about their day. They’re excited to show their worksheets or perhaps a nice art project. However, there are times when kids bring home something else. They might bring home a bunch of nasty germs or some unwanted illnesses. Keep their hands off their face
One of the reasons why children easily get sick is that they usually put their hands on their face, eyes, nose and mouth. Make sure to call them out when this happens until it becomes a conscious effort to keep their hands off their face. If they need to rub something off, be sure they always have a tissue handy.
Establish the habit of hand washing
Another important habit children must be taught is regular hand washing. Send your kids straight to the sink to wash their hands as soon as they get home from school. Train them to make it a routine to wash their hands before and after meals, after playing with their toys, going outdoors, and after they use the restroom. A lot of sicknesses can be prevented by the simple habit of hand washing. Make sure that this becomes a part of your child’s routine.
Have them use utensils to eat
Keep their hands out of their mouths when eating by making sure they are using utensils. Whether it’s breakfast or snacks, it’s better to use utensils to avoid contaminating the food.
Get plenty of sleep
Young children need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep each night to keep their bodies well rested. An adequate amount of sleep also boosts their immune system. Make sure your kids sleep early enough so that they wake up refreshed the next day. Establish an early bedtime routine that includes taking a shower, changing into their pajamas and reading them a book. If they have trouble sleeping, make sure to curb screen time at least an hour before bedtime.
Encourage exercise and active lifestyle
Exercise is important for adults and children alike. Just because your child is still little doesn’t mean they can be sedentary. They need to be physically active to stay healthy and strong. This might be even more difficult nowadays because most kids have television screens, laptops and smart devices. However, it is your role as parents to make sure they move their bodies and exercise. So, instead of letting them spend the weekends watching their favorite cartoons, why don’t you have them play outside? Or encourage them to try out a new sport? If they love dancing, you might want to enroll them in a dance class.
Eat healthy food
When planning family meals, make sure they include plenty of healthy foods. Always aim for a well balanced diet with fruits and vegetables. Even when you’re packing meals for lunch, it’s important to make sure they are nutritious. If your child is a bit picky when it comes to food, look for creative ways to incorporate veggies into their snacks.
Teach proper technique when sneezing and coughing
Teach your child to cover their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. They can use their hands or, better yet, their elbows. They are less likely to spread germs when elbows are used instead of hands.
