It’s a common thing for kids to feel agitated and angry at certain times. Unfortunately, there’s no anger management class for kids. This kind of aggression is not deliberate. Oftentimes, it’s your child’s way of asserting himself. This happens when they can’t fully express what he wants and what he feels. While anger is a feeling, aggression is a behavior. This is the time to teach your child that using aggression cannot solve his problems. You need to guide your child to learn how to control his impulses, manage his emotions and express his feelings with words.

There are a number of ways to calm down a person. Finding what works for your child can help calm them down.. It can be a sort of experiment as it’s trial and error. Here are a couple of tips you can teach your child.

Have a “chill spot” and go there

There will be times that your child’s feelings will be aggravated. Instead of taking a “time out”, turn it into a positive thing and designate a place where they can go to calm themselves. This “chill spot” can be the bedroom, the comfy sofa chair in the living room, or anywhere that you feel comfortable and safe. Decide with your child on where this chill spot would be when you are all calm. Explain the purpose of it. You and your kids can share this chill spot and make it a pleasant place.

Do some breathing exercises

When your child is upset, they breathe shallowly. This will just keep them anxious and agitated. Teach your child breathing exercises. Teach them to slow down their breathing and take deep breaths. This can help the body calm down physiologically. This will also help them have a calmer mental state. So when there’s stress caused by a negative situation, tell your child to pause and take a deep breath or two.

Go for a Walk

Going outside and having some exercise will be an effective way to calm down. If your kid feels anger, a five to 10-minute walk with no talking can help. This can be good for children with ADHD. Walking can give them more benefits than you know.

Listen to soothing music

Soothing music will relax anxious minds. Make a playlist with calming music and happy tones. You can also involve your child in making the playlist if they’re up to it.

Make a list of things you are thankful for

Gratitude can help ease the anger you feel in your heart. Teach and help your child to be thankful for even the little things in life. One thing you can do is have them write down things they are grateful for. This will help them calm down as they think about the their list.

Watch funny videos or look at funny memes

Funny pictures or videos can also do the trick! After all, there’s a saying that “Laughter is the best medicine”. It can also be good medicine for anger. Laughing can alter your emotions and make you forget your anger for a while. This is another great way to calm down for kids.

Hug it out

When your child is upset or angry, holding him or hugging him for a while will help him calm down. This may seem strange but it is an effective way to make them feel warm and loved.

Stretch and Loosen Up

When your child feels upset, one way to calm him down is to help him loosen up. Teach him to do some stretches. This will help with their breathing and will bring calmness within.

Quiet time

This can be after going to your designated chill spot. Sitting down and having quiet time will bring forth calmness to your mind. It will get your mind off the stress you are currently feeling. Teach your child to have quiet time if they are upset or angry. They can either just sit down or do other activities (like doing a puzzle). When you and your child have both cooled off, that’s when you can have the discussion about what happened.

Teach your child empathy

Children, especially the younger ones, aren’t aware that their behavior can affect other people around them. There are children who hit, kick, or bite when they’re angry. This is where you should come in.  Get down on their level and ask them nicely to calm down. Ask them calmly what they would feel if someone did that to them. For example, “If your friend hits you like that, wouldn’t you feel hurt and cry?” This will make them think about their actions in the future. While they are still young, teach them the importance of empathy and show them examples as much as you can.

When your child has tantrums and has aggressive behavior, this will disrupt the peace in your home. This could also put other family members at risk. Especially when your child explodes and responds negatively when they are being disciplined. Your child can be taught  how to deal with his anger issues at home and school. Be supportive and show your child that you are there for him. As a parent you need to learn how to calm kids down and what works best for your kids and continue to practice it together.
